Repent and Believe the Good News! - Romans 2:6-11
In Romans 1:18-32 Paul, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, paints the sad and chilling portrait of the shameless unbeliever. Those who do not acknowledge or honor God (1:28 and 21). In Romans 2:1-5 Paul shines the light on the self-righteous unbeliever. The person who takes pride in their morality. The person who takes pride in their relation to others (…at least I don’t do that. At least I’m not as bad as him…). It’s also a warning to believers to beware self-righteous tendencies. Romans 2:6-11 is a powerful passage that stitches these two categories of people together (the shameless unbeliever, and the self-righteous unbeliever). Theologians and commentators describe this section of scripture as either “the impossible standard” (2:7 & 10), or a picture of living faith (also 2:7 & 10). Regardless of the view that is held, it leads one back to the glorious truth: We Are Saved! By Grace Alone, Through Faith Alone, in Christ Alone!
