How Dare You - Romans 3:1-8

Romans 1 and 2 read like a grand (though sad and serious) address delivered by a skillful prosecuting attorney. The Apostle Paul dismantles the defenses of both the Gentile (1:18-32) and the Jew (2:1-3, and 2:17-24). They are guilty of transgressing a holy and awesome God. And at the end of Chapter 2, the prosecution rests for a moment. In Romans 3:1-8, it’s as if some fictitious defense attorney now rises in answer to Paul. An attorney seeking to defend the Gentile and the Jew. But the questions posed by this objector are neither respectful nor earnest. This is not a noble seeker like the Bereans of Acts (Acts 17:10-11). Neither is this a sincere and hurting fellow crying out to God like Job (Job 13:15). Abba, Father welcomes these appeals. No, this objector fancies himself clever. But he is startling, dishonorable, arrogant, and insolent. And Paul will have some stern words for him… When pondering divine truths beware arrogance and cleverness. Be very humble. Like a child…
