2005
AWANA Summit
Ten
teens from Calvary Bible Church Varsity AWANA club traveled to
St. Louis, Mo. for 5 days in April to compete at Summit.
Summit attracts more than 1500 teens from across the
country for national competition in Bible quizzing, AwanaGames,
Fine Arts, Volleyball and Basketball categories.
The following are some details and the results of the
various events in which our teens competed.
Bible
Quizzing:
There were 162 Bible quiz teams (4 quizzers /team) competing
for a full day of intense multiple choice and speed quizzing.
Our CBC Bible quiz team, consisting of Susanna Bicknell,
Daniel Hanson and David and Benjamin Scadding, competed
against 16 other teams in the preliminary round and placed
first (220 points above the 2nd place team). Next,
they advanced on to place first in each of the consecutive
rounds of bronze, silver and gold ranking them with the top
ten Bible quiz teams in the country. They then went on to
compete against nine teams in the Platinum round with an
audience of thousands. When all was said and done our
team placed 4th in the nation in Bible quizzing.
AwanaGames:
There were 60 teams competing in the AwanaGames (Beginning
with 600 teens competing at once). Our athletes consisted of
all 10 of our teens; Susanna Bicknell, Jessica Booth, Dan
Hanson, Greg and Richard Papastefanou, Megan Puglisi, Ben and
Dave Scadding, Tiffany Talley and Sharon Roach. In the games,
teams that placed 1st and 2nd in each
round would advance to compete in the next round of games. Our
CBC team placed 1st on their circle then 1st
again, then 2nd place (by just 1 point) in the
first three consecutive rounds then in the fourth round they
placed 3rd. Our teens demonstrated incredible
agility, strength, speed and teamwork as they made it through
4 of the 7 rounds of games and finished proudly with bronze
medals.
Fine
Arts:
Dan Hanson was the only one of our teens who competed in the
Fine Arts category. He entered in the area of creative writing
and took a silver medal. He placed 2nd in the
nation for his essay.
Volleyball:
There were 32 teams (7 players/team for a total of 224 teens
participating) competing in a double elimination format (which
means a team had to lose 2 games to be considered out of the
competition). Our team, consisting of Susanna, Jessica, Dan,
Ben, Dave, Greg and Richard, won the first three games then
had to wait over 2 hours to play their next game…..which,
they lost. They then played and won several more games in a
row over the next two hours. Finally, it was 11:30 p.m. and it
was down to CBC competing against a team that had been
undefeated the entire evening. Our CBC team won this
undefeated team (15 – 12) in the first game then had to play
them again to determine the final, national winning team. CBC
lost (by only 4 points; 15 - 11) placing them 2nd
in the nation in volleyball.
Our
teens did a fine job in competition as well as in representing
our Lord and our church. We are extremely proud of them. We
are in need of teens to compete in AwanaGames for Summit 2006
(to be held in Chicago, IL.) if you know a teen who is
interested in trying out for the team please contact Lisa or
Jim via e-mail at Awanacabin@aol.com.
